Sales Tax Calculator

Add sales tax to a price, work backward from a tax-included total to the pre-tax price, or find the rate you were actually charged. Pick a US state to pre-fill its rate, or enter any rate by hand — the tax amount, subtotal, and total update instantly. Works for sales tax, VAT, and GST, all in your browser.

Pre-tax price $0

Three modes, one rate

Most of the time you want to add tax: you know the shelf price and need the out-the-door total. But the reverse comes up constantly too — a receipt shows only the total, or a price is quoted tax-included and you need the base. "Remove tax" divides instead of multiplies: the pre-tax price is the total divided by one-plus-the-rate, not the total minus the rate (a common mistake that's always a little off). And when you know both numbers but not the rate, "Find the rate" backs out the percentage you were actually charged.

Sales tax rates by state (2026)

State base rates and the maximum combined rate including local (county, city, and district) add-ons, as of mid-2026. The calculator's state picker pre-fills the base rate; in most states your real rate sits somewhere between the two columns, so check a receipt for the exact local figure. Rates change — verify anything load-bearing with your state's revenue department.

Sales tax, VAT, and GST are the same math

Whether it's US sales tax, European VAT, or GST elsewhere, the arithmetic is identical — a percentage applied to a price. The difference is mostly presentation: US prices are usually shown pre-tax and tax is added at the register, while VAT-region prices are typically shown tax-included. That's why this calculator offers both directions.

FAQ

Is anything I enter sent to a server?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser — open DevTools → Network and confirm. Nothing you type is uploaded.

How do I figure out the tax on a price?

Use "Add tax to a price": enter the pre-tax price and the rate, and you get the tax amount and the total. Tax is simply price × rate, and the total is price + tax.

How do I find the pre-tax price from a total?

Use "Remove tax from a total": enter a tax-inclusive total and the rate, and the calculator backs out the original price with pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate). This is handy for receipts that only show the final amount, or for working out a list price from a tax-included sticker.

What sales tax rate should I use?

Whatever applies where the sale happens. In the US there's no national sales tax — rates are set by state, county, and city and commonly combine to roughly 4–10%. Pick your state in the calculator to pre-fill the state base rate, then adjust upward for your local (county/city/district) add-on — the hint under the picker shows how high the combined rate runs in your state. The rate from a recent receipt is the most accurate source.

Which states have no sales tax?

Five states charge no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no local sales taxes either, so purchases there are genuinely tax-free at the register. Alaska is the exception — there's no state rate, but local jurisdictions can levy their own sales taxes of up to about 7%.

How do I find the tax rate I was charged?

Use the Find the rate mode: enter the pre-tax price and the total you paid, and the calculator computes the implied rate as total ÷ pre-tax − 1. Paying $108.25 on a $100 purchase means you were charged 8.25%. It's an easy way to check a receipt or work out a jurisdiction's combined rate from a real purchase.

Does this handle VAT or GST?

Yes — the math is identical. VAT (value-added tax) and GST (goods and services tax) are added to a price the same way sales tax is, so "add tax" and "remove tax" work for any of them. Just enter your VAT/GST rate. Note that VAT-region prices are often already tax-inclusive, so "remove tax" is usually the mode you want there.

Is the result exact for tax I'll be charged?

It's exact arithmetic on the rate you enter, but real receipts can differ by a cent due to rounding rules, and some items are taxed at special rates or exempt. Treat it as an accurate estimate, not a substitute for the register.
